Short CV

I am an Ikerbasque Professor and Ramon y Cajal Fellow at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) (Bilbao, Spain), where I have led the Adaptation Research Group since 2018. I have a background in Environmental Engineering (BSc 2004, MSc 2009, School of Engineering of Bilbao) and a PhD in Land Economy (University of Cambridge, 2015). I moved to BC3 after working for 8 years in research and consultancy. I have undertaken international scientific stays in Germany (IÖR, Dresden - 2005), the Netherlands (IVAM, Amsterdam - 2006), the United Kingdom (University of Newcastle – 2010, Univ. Southampton – 2018), Canada (McGill University - 2016) and Portugal (Universidade Nova, CENSE, May 2019). In 2011, I co-founded the Urban Resilience Researchers Network (URNet) and remained as Chair until 2019. In 2020, I contributed to the foundation of IPAM (the International Platform on Adaptation Metrics), where I have chaired the Committee on Cities and now represent BC3 on the Steering Committee. I also represent BC3 in the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA). I advise and contribute to different international bodies such as the UNFCCC and UNEP. As an example, I currently serve as Lead Author in the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. I have also been a contributing author of the IPCC AR6 (2022) and a reviewer of the Adaptation Gap Report 2021. My scientific output includes over 100 contributions across a variety of peer-reviewed journals and other outlets aimed at broader audiences. My work focuses on urban sustainability and climate governance, with a strong interest in co-creating actionable knowledge to support effective decision-making. My current research examines pathways to enable more transformative climate adaptation in cities globally, with a particular emphasis on strengthening monitoring and evaluation processes and applying transdisciplinary approaches across visioning, planning, evaluation, and learning. I am the PI of the European Research Council (ERC) project IMAGINE Adaptation (2023-2027, 1.5 M€) (https://imagineadapt.bc3research.org/), where I currently coordinate transdisciplinary work across 12 cities worldwide.
